Our History
The Lyric Rooms has a rich history that spans centuries, evolving from a school to a cinema, and now a stunning event venue.
Throughout the years, this building has been carefully transformed to meet the needs of its community, blending historical charm with modern elegance.
The Origins: Built in 1721
01
Our stunning building dates back to 1721, originally constructed as a school. Steeped in history, it served the local community for many years. The timeless charm of its architecture is a testament to its legacy, with features that have stood the test of time, even as the world around it has evolved. Today, it continues to be a cherished space for special moments.
The Transformation: From School to Cinema
02
In 1912, the building was transformed into the Lyric Picture Palace, a cinema that became a beloved entertainment venue. Prior to its cinematic days, it had been the Wagon & Horses public house. The cinema experience at the Lyric Picture Palace was a major part of the community’s cultural life for decades, drawing locals in to enjoy the magic of the silver screen.

A New Era: The Lyric Rooms
In recent decades, the building was repurposed once again, becoming The Lyric Rooms. As we’ve updated and modernised this historic building, we've worked hard to preserve its character while ensuring it meets the needs of today’s events. The Lyric Rooms offers an elegant space for all occasions, from weddings and receptions to corporate events and parties.
